Mommy's Closet and A Fashion Blogger's Rite of Passage

Mom's Closet

Faux fur coat / IRO short skirt, $710 / Schutz leather sandals / A V Max long necklace / Dutch Basics golden earring / Our Legacy mens silk shirt, $185 / Chanel lipstick

If you ask any girl or woman where she gets her style inspiration from they would probably list their favorite designers or where the things that impacted them personally. Yet, if you really think about it every fashionista was once a child or is probably growing up. A part that is necessary to growing up is fashion blogger's rite of passage. Going to your mother's closet and playing dress up around the age of 4 and 5 can signify the beginning and birth of a true fashionista. Seeing items that are signify your mother and the things that she has been through. The scent on her clothing; expensive Chanel No. 5 and classic Dior. Then once you are done with her closet you go to her vanity to look at all the makeup utensils she uses. When you look on her vanity you see everything on there from the professional brushes she uses to the bronzers.

Looking through a mom's closet can be very enlightening and actually save tons of money. In today's fashion world almost every decade is in style and who else room to go to then your mommy's? (I sometimes even go as far as to my grandmother's closet). Sometimes your mom's closet is the most convenient because instead of always spending more money on clothes that are being re-modernize why not get the authentic thing from her closet or the thrift store.

Clothes have such a deeper meaning to them than just how cute you look and a self expression. In earlier decades clothes were actually designed to last which is why a lot of old have such great quality. There's something great about feeling vintage clothes especially from mom's closet. the velvety-ness, the scent of her perfume, or even the story behind it. It gives of nostalgic memories of when you were younger and in her arms, but at the same time it shows that the baby bird has finally grown up. the baby bird has finally blossomed into a strong bird like her mother.

NOTE:
*So I really apologize because I got my silky shirt from my mommy dearest closet, my real leather skirt from a thrift store those places are the best!), my shoes are from the thrift store as well, my bag from Love Culture, and my faur fur two toned jacket from Choies!*

Modern Fashion Icon: Seven Times Rihanna's Style Owned 2016, Quotes, and Body Image Tips

This year Rihanna totally slayed the fashion game. Not only did she slay, but she also released a new album, went on tour, sung at the Billboard music Awards, released her new line with Manolo and FentyXPuma, and founded a scholarship program for island high school and college students. Rihanna even received the Fashion Icon Award back in 2014. Is there anything she can't do? Here are a few of her outfits that totally stunned each and everyone:

1. Pin Stripes

On being different:
When I was fourteen and first started going out, I always wanted to be the opposite of everyone else. So I would go to the club in a polo T-shirt and pants and sneakers and a hat on backward, just so I would not be dressed like other girls.

2. Gorgeous In Green

3. The Fader Look

On Music:
It is one thing to record an album but it's a huge difference when people play it and listen to it and embrace it the way that I do. It has always been my dream to get my music out to the world and have people hear it

4. New York Fashion Week FentyXPuma

On fashion:
When I am putting looks together, I dare myself to make something work. I always look for the most interesting silhouette or something that's a little off, but I have to figure it out. I have to make it me. I think that's the thrill in fashion.

5.  Stance Socks

On Mamas and standards:
My mother would kill me if I posed nude! My mother raised me with certain standards.
6.  Denim and Puma

On the Gym and Working out:
I hate going to the gym and doing it the old-fashioned way. I hate anything that's too straightforward, too routine, too familiar. I get bored really, really quickly.

7.  Billboard Music Awards 2016

On ruling the Fashion Game:

"Growing up I didn't have a lot of access to fashion. But as far as I could remember, fashion has always been my defense mechanism. Even as a child I remember thinking, 'She can beat me, but she cannot beat my outfit.' And to this day I mean, that is how I think about it. I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion. And so really, you really can."

On Faith:
"God just has a way of working things out the way He wants to and you have no say in that." -Rihanna

Vintage Inspired: Quotes and Looks

Some days as fashionistas, and bloggers we need a little inspiration. Something that's not too modern or too trendy. There is always a great time to pull out some vintage looks whether from a thrift store or an upscale vintage store. When it comes living in the fashion world and even being inspired there is a need for fashion icons, and outfit inspiration like these five quotes from Audrey Hepburn, and my vintage style look book.

Five Audrey Hepburn Style & Life Quotes to Live By:

1. "The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries or the way she combs her hair."

2. "For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone."
3. "The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides."

4. "The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years."

5. "I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it's the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It's probably the most important thing in a person."

Fashion Bloggers:How to Stay Inspired Even When It Gets Tough

Sometimes the going can get tough for a lot of people. No matter what happens though you still have to push threw, but there are some days when no one really feels like going. Being a fashion blogger can be especially tough, because actually it's expensive. Any business you want to grow you have to spend money for it to increase or grow. If your goal is to make money from your blog then you must spend money to make money. Nothing is handed to you you have to work for it. Sometimes as fashion bloggers we might want to give up because there are so many fashion bloggers now and days and you might be feeling like what's the point? The point it that you're doing what you love. Just make sure you're not another fashion blog make sure yours is different from others. So here are a few tips from me to stay encouraged on your blogging journey:

FOCUS ON YOU!

A lot of other sites say, "network with other bloggers, and visit their pages," that's all fine and dandy, but don't compare your blog if you know you're not at their level yet. Focus on your blog and how you are going to make yours stand out. It can become discouraging (trust me I know) constantly looking at top fashion bloggers fashion blogs. They did not get their over night so don't put that kind of pressure on yourself. Just be you, and success with come naturally.

DO THE OPPOSITE OF EVERYONE ELSE

I know this can be challenging but look deep into yourself, and see what you have to offer that others don't. Don't just do what every other Fashion blogger or blogger is doing. Yes, everyone loves fashion but what more do you have to offer than just fashion? Do you paint? Do you dance? Write? Have a book club?

DO NETWORK AND TRY COLLABORATIONS

I know that this sounds like I am contradicting myself, but what I mean here is to still network just do not make that your entire focus. So still network, because you never know if you'll become close friends with another fashion blogger. Then after you become friends or meet you can try to set up a fashion blogger duo or do a collaboration on something. You never know what others have to offer until you meet others.

THE PROCESS WILL BE LONG BUT IT'S WORTH IT

Not everyone will be the next Aimee Song or Anna Wintour, but what counts is that you did what you were passionate about. Sometimes we want to rush our success, but the main thing is that it is worth it whether or not you are successful. It can be a learning experience both ways: if you made it and if you did not. making money on blogs can  sometimes take longer for others because some do not have the funds to buy all the things that come with a fashion blog, and some do. The road might be long and hard, but if you keep working at it you will get there.

Stay encouraged and keep pushing because it can get hard, but just stay patient.

Life Milestone: Meeting Christina Karin and Slaying While Doing it

Okay, hi FancyMouseketeers something great has happened this past Saturday I was invited to Christina Karin's sample sale in Wicker park which was awesome. Most of her designs are really bold to me, and she's even really good at fashion illustrating. This summer I was supposed to intern for her, but some things came up. Yet, I still thought it was sweet for her team to ask me to come to the sample sale. I got a glimpse of what it would be like working with her, she's super friendly, and sweet btw! Just seeing her designs and showroom helped me believe in working hard and pushing hard even when you do not want to. Sometimes it is hard especially now in the fashion industry because there are millions of other fashion bloggers I have to compete with. Also, as a college student I have a ton of homework, and even jobs, and I still have to make time for blogging. Sometimes you may want to give up but never stop, because the end result will always be great.

Here is my "attending my first Fashion Showroom Sample Sale" Look book lol:

Here is a look similar to the one I am sporting in my photos:

Ways to get this look:

Simple Look for Work

Why It's Okay To Wear THIN Fur Jackets in the Summer

Most of the time when summer starts we're all a little skeptical of if the weather will be a little tricky. Well living in Chicago the weather can go from 90 degrees one day to the next day 65 degrees. Last week, it was one of those days in Chicago. This outfit does include short sleeves, and a skirt because it's not that chilly outside, but it's nice enough to wear a thin fuzzy jacket.

It's really that simple just get a not so hot outfit, a thin fuzzy/furry jacket, and there you have a mid temperature not so hot outfit.

Dear Powerful Young Woman Who Faced Brock Turner,

Sexual assault is not a joke, but yet in today's society we are still trying to figure out if a privileged college athlete should go to jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. That woman is not just some girl who attended a Stanford Fraternity party; no she's all of us. She's us when some of us were partying and intoxicated, and could not find our friends or someone we knew. She's us trying to be stronger for our younger or older sisters. She's us when we're smiling and being care free with our friends, and not thinking anything like this could ever happen. She's even us when sexual assault happens to you or someone you know, and you can't even look yourself in the mirror. No one expects things like this to happen, but college has been trying to make it more aware on campuses. Yet, the question is why in today's society there are more articles with the named "Brock Turner" in the title than about what needs to happen for the victim. What are the measures being taken to stop this from reoccurring on more campuses? What are the measures being taken to strengthened or make stricter sexual assault sentences FOR EVERYONE? A lot of colleges Sexual Assault "awareness" is barely awareness. According to Huffington Post, in November 2014 there was a survey distributed to all Indiana University students, and 29% of the female students reported to dealing with some non consensual inappropriate sexual contact. 29% is a pretty high number, because  it's higher than the national average.

1 in 5 Women (20%) of College Women are Sexually Assaulted As Opposed to 4% of Men

This statistic is not new or unknown, yet Sexual Assault is still ignored until it happens to someone or a women on campus. So yes we can talk about alcohol abuse, but the real issue here is the fact that there are more women being attacked than men, but there's still not enough being done. There is also another a statistic from DoSomething.org that states, "42% of college women who are raped tell no one about the assault." Honestly, you've made a bold stance by even speaking up about how you've felt and it was great that those two guys saved you. But what if they didn't? I wonder if you would have told someone or kept it inside like the other 42% of women. Well, I am glad that they saved you, and you spoke out about this issue. Everyone including males were able to feel your pain. Women who may have felt judged if they told someone, women who thought that the blame would have been on them; women who may have felt just like you? This happening to you has helped so many women share their stories, and that is what counts.

Under Reported Crime

According to DoSomething.org only 5% of sexual assaults on college campuses are reported, which makes sexual assaults a very under reported crime. There are a lot of girls out there who have been carrying around the baggage of how you have felt during this whole process. You're not a victim you're a powerful young woman, because you chose to speak out. What I mean is you could have said nothing or left out details, but you chose to let the whole world know how it feels to be sexually assaulted. This helped so many girls , including me, speak out and share their stories. There is too much of a lack of female support when it comes to sexual assault. This is probably why many young women do not speak out about it, because they have been told by society that it's their fault, that it was something they were wearing, or that they deserved it. The top five reasons why young women do not report sexual assault according to Global news, are:

  • Feeling young and powerless 56%
  • Shame 40%
  • Self-blame 29%
  • Desire to move on 26%
  • Belief reporting wouldn't do any good 21%
Yet, sometimes shaming comes from the legal system as well. The shaming may not be intentional, but sometimes questions like "What were you wearing or doing," can come off that way. No matter what a woman is wearing she still should not be blamed for what happened to her. A lot of times we want to teach young girls to wear modest clothing, or do not drink too much at parties, or even act a certain way, but what about guys? What if we talked to guys as much as we talk to girls about appearance, and how to behave themselves? Maybe things would not happen at that blink of an eye, but maybe things can begin to make a transition. There also needs to be a change in the way some police officers handle sexual assault, because victims should not feel like they are not credible when speaking to the police. All of the answers won't be here quickly, but on the behalf of probably majority of women and girls thank you for speaking out. For not, not saying anything when Brock Turner gave his statement. Yes, it was hard, but you gave so many girls hope and belief that they are not alone. Sometimes, we may think we are alone in this. We might feel devastated, empty, and shameful, but the truth is it was not our fault. Those nights we felt alone, and scared to open up won't disappear, but there is now a chance for a better future. Thank you, and you're not a victim you're a powerful young woman even if you don't feel like it.

Ways To Rock Color and Still Dress Business Casual for an Internship

Yesterday, I kept it cool, chic, and business casual for my new Communications/PR internship at Chicago Housing Authority. I don't like my heels too high (who really does when walking downtown?). So a lot of people that were former interns like me were just really wearing black and white, but me as a fashion blogger I took risks and a lot of people are afraid to take risks in a business casual environment. Well do not be as long as you are not wearing a mini-skirt, some bright neon colors, or a crop tops then you should be good. There are some great ways to be fashionable but also business casual (just throwing that out there). So I am here to help you find those ways so you don't think everyday has to be a black and white kind of day.

In this color I went all out because it was Monday and who doesn't need colors for to get through a full time work week? First, I got a pale pink shirt because you want color, but not a super bright color. Then I got a printed skirt that was below my knees because that is what most Business casual professionals want. It may seem hard but honestly, you just can't be afraid. A lot of people told me that I looked nice and those were big names at the company I work at. Do not be afraid to try new things out. Just abide by the dress code rules and you should be fine!

#NoMakeUp Movement, Alicia Keys, and Contouring

Makeup has been around for centuries and people have always been wearing it. Last year contouring has blown up since Kim Kardashian and other celebrities. A lot of people have really just been expressing themselves in this new trend of contouring and full faced makeup. Yet, not one current celebrity has been interested in wearing no makeup for awhile. Not one until Alicia Keys who is now even posing on magazine covers, as seen on her instagram, makeup-less. Does makeup or going makeup-less really empowers women? Or is it something that helps us bash and attack other women?

As I scrolled through the comments on Facebook after reading Huffington Post Black Voices piece on Alicia Keys and the no makeup hashtags, I saw a lot of negative comments. People who did wear makeup were saying things like, "I do not like how people who don't wear makeup are always bashing people who do, but people who do wear makeup never say or try to force people to wear makeup." Women in general seem to have this issue a lot. It even goes back to men pitting women against each other, because a lot of times there are memes about guys who like women who don't wear as much makeup and about women who do wear makeup and love it. In a way we should all just try to accept each others views. The same thing happens with the natural hair movement. Some people who are natural feel obligated to help "transform" non-naturals. If someone is okay with contouring and perms then they should be able to do that. We should not make other women feel like they are not accepted because they contour or perm their hair everyone is different. Some people know themselves, and they maybe know that natural hair would not be cute on them or that without makeup they think that they do not like right.

Still, Alicia Keys is far from trying to down other women she's lifting herself up by not covering anything up on herself anymore she wants to be free and open. That's what really counts about the #nomakeup challenge. To inspired other women to fully be free and not hide anymore. She's inspiring other women to do it, and that's what matters. So can we all just stop trying to compete and put each other down? We all have preferences and of course they are not all going to be the same.

Internship Style LookBook: Carrie Diaries Inspired

Internship Essentials

Since I was 17 years old I loved the short lived tv series The Carrie Diaries. Basically, in short for those of you who do not know what the show was about it was the younger version of the Carrie Bradshaw we all know about. Before the city and the crazy lifestyle there was just Carrie Bradshaw. Throughout, the show she goes through crazy life challenges, designs a gorgeous purse, and scores an internship at a top magazine company. It was that show that really opened my eyes to fashion. Anything vintage attracts and I don't know why, but the 60's and the 80's will always be my favorite fashion decades. Anyways, this post is about internship outfits so let's get started!

This was Carrie's first internship outfit, and I absolutely loved it. If you love mixing and matching prints then this look will suit you! The print and the tied up dress blouse definitely gives it an 80's flair. Also, I apologize but I got my pink vintage 80's blouse from the thrift store. Still, after searching high and low on the internet I found this really cute mustard colored top from chicwish!

Here is an outfit I created Polyvore that you can try to recreate or buy: @colemakayla on Polyvore

Outfit Details:

This outfit is both modern and vintage at the same time. Just a pop of color and primary colors helps make it not too overwhelming. The lace on the skirt makes it a little more formal and fancy with the lace fringe at the bottom. The print on the purse compliments the mustard colored top, and makes it a great statement piece. Sporting this outfit at an interview, job, or internship will definitely turn heads and you might even get offered a position at Vogue or something. (Okay kidding about the last part, but still!) Also, check out The Carrie Diaries on Netflix there are only two seasons and comment what you like to wear for internships or don't like to wear.
