When it comes to church Black people do not play. We love to get down on our knees and fall down and pray in the midst of troubles. We were brought here and thought the gospel and leaned on God in times of troubles. The cotton fields was where gospel music was born as well as our faith in God. Then during the civil rights era we leaned and depended on God to help us through those perilous times. The gospel taught us how to love with the agape love, and gain equal rights for everyone. Yet, somewhere down the lines we seem to have forgotten about shedding light on these problems praying about them and then acting on them in a positive way.
The first time I have ever felt this way about the Black community was at my college. I do not want to keep talking about Trinity as if it is this negative place because it is not I am just sharing my experiences. Still, I began to notice how some people would tell me to just pray about the situation or talk to the person and those things are all find and great ways, but when are we going to talk about the real problems? This does not just happen at school but even in my home and church life. Although, my school is becoming "woke" this still happens in other areas of my life.
Growing up and still today, I would often hear pastors, prophets, evangelists, etc. (but mainly pastors and prophets), say that "God is going to bless everyone in here with money so sow a seed tonight." I did not realize until last week actually that yes, God is going to bless us when we sow seeds, but when are we going to say something about the injustices that face us as a Black community. Can we just really be real for a moment and just admit that we still live in a society where the system is designed for minorities specifically African Americans to fail. Can we just admit that yes it could be a demonic spirit about why our men are constantly being thrown in jail, but also that's just how institutionalized racism works. I love God and I am not knocking His Power, but I think as Black people sometimes we hide behind the spiritual veil a little too much that we forget that not everything is the devil and God wouldn't be mad if we stood up for what was right. I believe that the church needs to be more involved in the Black matter movement, Black women's issues, and the justice system. How can we be the light of the world when we barely share the gospel truly anymore?
I realize that for some people they believe that the church is only for spiritual things. I agree that some people even only want to be fed the word of God and keep all secular activities out. Still, I often wonder should African American churches continue to passively address the issues we face today or should we do something about it? How long are we going to pretend like we do not see the injustices we face each and everyday? I know that we are trying to stay saved and sanctified, but can we rise up and do something for our communities . This was really an opinion piece and feel free to share your thoughts.
